Piazza di San Cosimato is next to my hotel in Trastevere. Trastevere is a neighborhood outside of Rome, across the Tiber River, that has gained a lot more tourism over the years. The Piazza has a park for children, and it has a market open during the day. Nightlife is when the Piazza thrives because the Piccolo America association holds an open cinema in the piazza on select nights for free.

The first night I experienced the piazza was during an Italian drag queen show. The first performance featured a choir, the second included a song sung by Miss Priscilla, and the last was a dance performance by the Ballrhome Project. Miss Priscilla, a drag performer named Mariano Gallo, was the special guest that night, wearing a large blonde wig with a pink robe over a green dress. The performance focused on caring for the world, accompanied by images of natural disasters and volcanoes alongside people projected on the cinema’s screen. Miss Priscilla was interviewed afterward.

The night ended with playing the American drag queen film, “Tangerine”. “Tangerine” is a film directed by Sean Baker that takes place in Los Angeles during Christmas Eve. The plot is about a trans woman who finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her, and her friend, a trans sex worker, helps her find the cheater. I went to the cinema some other nights with other movies being “Halloween” directed by John Carpenter and an Italian movie on the liberation of Italy during WWII, “Paisan.”
